Sedition is excited to celebrate its 2nd anniversary! It has been two years since we set on this journey to offer artists an online ecosystem to bring their works closer to art lovers in the digital age. Breaking preconceptions, Sedition has seen several of the world’s most celebrated artists joining the platform and supporting this innovative concept. Today, we are proud and humbled by the support we have received and we’d like to take a moment to thank all our artists, collectors, members and partners for a fantastic two years. We have come a long way with the release of outstanding new artists and artworks, the development of key product features and apps, and major presentations of works from Sedition artists in international exhibitions and events.
Let us share a few highlights from the last 24 months:
A brand new Sedition app for Samsung Smart TV App launched allowing Samsung Smart TV owners the chance to buy, collect and display limited edition art for their home. The app was showcased at the WIRED 2012 conference.
The first-ever first-ever Sedition Pop-Up Digital Art Gallery as part of the WIRED Pop-Up Store featuring works on Samsung Smart TVs in Quadrant Arcade on Regent Street in London. Sedition was featured alongside other innovative start-ups occupying the different shop fronts in the arcade.
In February, we launched Tracey Emin’s I Promise To Love You Collection in celebration of Valentine’s Day. We travelled to New York to present an impressive display of Emin’s collection for the entire month in the heart Times Square as part of Time Square Alliance’s Midnight Moment. It was the largest public display of Tracey Emin’s work in the US to date.
The Sedition Open Platform launched, enabling all artists for the first time to submit and sell artworks on Sedition. At the same time, we were also the official partner of EYEO Festival in Minneapolis – the leading festival that brings together artists, creative coders, data visualizers, and open source instigators to encourage a new generation of digital artists to distribute their work on Sedition through the Open Platform.
This month, we also presented Liu Xiaodong’s digital edition Blinking at a satellite exhibition of the Venice Biennale 55th International Art Exhibition.
In September, we launched our newly designed Android app to optimise the experience of your Sedition artworks on mobile and tablet devices.
In the same month, we presented a new digital edition; Presence 2.1 by Matt Pyke as part of his exhibition Universal Everything & You at the Science Museum’s brand new Media Space.
We also presented a 90-minute curated programme as part of the ikono On Air Festival, the first ever arts festival exclusively broadcasted on TV and live stream.
We partnered with Edition HOTELS for the opening of The London EDITION hotel to create a stunning new digital edition by Mat Collishaw titled Prosopopoeia. This piece was offered exclusively for their members and was displayed as an installation the week before the opening of the Hotel. A collection of Sedition artworks continues to be available for guests to enjoy right in their hotel rooms.
Sedition Trade was born, allowing collectors to re-sell sold-out artworks at any named price. We also saw Ryoji Ikeda’s A Single Number That Has 124,761,600 Digits become the first artwork on Sedition to sell out all of its digital editions.
We partnered with Saatchi Gallery Magazine Art & Music to release a special edition by artist Bob & Roberta Smith for the magazine’s fifth year anniversary. The edition Art Makes Children Powerful was featured on the cover of the magazine’s Autumn 2013 issue.
Sedition participated in the Contemporary Istanbul Plug-in Media Art Fair. Our director Rory Blain spoke on a panel on The New Art Collector with Jack Pam, director of ikono.tv and Suzana Diamond from Artsy.
2013 also offered us two accolades including becoming an official honoree at the 2013 Webby Awards and receiving a Silver Award in the Art category at the Lovie Awards, which recognises the most innovated websites in Europe.
It’s been a jam-packed 2 years and we look forward to even more exciting projects and events in the upcoming months. We would like extend a sincere THANK YOU for all your support in our shared journey in creating the most exciting platform for collecting and selling digital art today. We could not have done this without you!
