Sedition Presents Art In The Digital Age Series at Shoreditch House

Starting in June 2016 Sedition presents Art In The Digital Age, a series of talks on contemporary and digital art collecting at Shoreditch House, London.

The series explores the new realms of digital art collecting, creation and exhibition. By bringing together experts in the fields of digital art, curating, art collecting and design, Art In The Digital Age will discuss, and ask interesting questions about, the future of the art world.

With the introduction of new technologies, the way contemporary art is experienced is undergoing significant changes. Media platforms, display techniques and softwares are redefining the way art is experienced and collected. The influence of the digital has structurally changed aspects of the art world, bringing art into contact with new spaces, disciplines and audiences. It has also led to questions around the artwork itself, such as: how can digital works be valued, stored and securely exchanged? What is the materiality of a digital artwork?

The first talk in the series is titled Art Collecting For The Home and takes place on 17 June from 7-9pm at Shoreditch House. It looks at how art is being displayed and integrated into contemporary domestic spaces. The event takes the form of a panel discussion between experts from three specialist areas.

Gordon Cheung is a painter whose work incorporates code as well as traditional media; a number of his works are available as digital editions on the Sedition platform, and his solo exhibition Here Be Dragons runs at Nottingham Castle until 17 July.

Khalid Laith is an actor and art collector with a particular interest in video art and art from the Middle East.

Liezel Strauss is the founder of fine art photography platform Subject Matter.

Sedition Guide to the 3rd International Biennial of Digital Art in Montréal

Opening in Montréal, Canada this June is the 3rd International Biennial of Digital Art (BIAN) presented alongside the 17th annual ELEKTRA festival of art music and new media. The biennial runs from 3 June to 3 July, while ELEKTRA takes place from 1 to 5 June.

The theme of this year’s biennial is ‘Automata’, art made by machines for machines, which features a large scale exhibition at Arsenal Contemporary Art in an expansive 50,000 square industrial space in the Griffintown district of Montréal. The exhibition includes works by international artists with a section dedicated to artists from Switzerland. The work of Sedition artists, Pascal Haudressy, Zimoun and Matthew Biederman are also featured in the exhibition. A selection of Sedition gift cards will be available for sale at Arsenal for the duration of the biennial.

Sedition will give a presentation of the distribution of digital art during the professional networking event International Marketplace for Digital Art (IMDA) as part of ELEKTRA taking place at Cinémathèque québécoise from 1-2 June 2016. The conference provides a platform from which to discuss the future of the digital art market. Sedition’s Head of Programmes and Operations Ashley Wong will introduce the work, context and potential future of Sedition on 2 June at 4:30pm. The presentation will contribute to a wider conversation about the distribution and collection of digital art.

Sedition will launch three new digital editions by Matthew Biederman and Pierce Warnecke from the Perspection series on 2 June with a launch event following IMDA at 5pm at Cinémathèque québécoise. The collection includes three audiovisual works created exclusively for Sedition.

PARALLELS by NONOTAK – digital edition available on Sedition

 

From 1 to 5 June, BIAN and ELEKTRA will be joined by MUTEK, the international festival of digital creativity and electronic music. Taking place at several venues in Montréal, MUTEK provides a platform for innovative and emerging artists working with audiovisual techniques.

Sedition artists NONOTAK and Matthew Biederman & Pierce Warnecke will be showing their latest work in interactive evening performances, both at A/Visions. NONOTAK will present their new work Shiro on 3 June at A/Visions 1. The interactive piece, which begins at 19:30, combines experimental techno, light and shadow, and multilayered projections across screens and the bodies of performers.

Biederman and Warnecke will present their work Perspection (Cubed) at MUTEK on 3 June. The work is a new version of the artists’ collaborative project Perspection, which projects geometric forms which, using 3D tracking, combine into a single shapeshifting image. Perspection (Cubed) is a site specific installation whose projectors and speakers add new dimensions to an already multidimensional work. The interactive installation is built using custom hardware and software.

On 4 June Matthew Biederman will take part in a panel discussion titled Experimental A/V design at the Phi Center. The discussion, which is part of MUTEK and takes place from 2-4pm, is hosted by Dynamic/MTL.

BIAN  takes place at Arsenal Contemporary Art, 2020 Rue William, Montréal, QC H3J 1R8, Canada.

ELEKTRA is held at Arsenal and at SAT, 1201 Boulevard Saint-Laurent, Montreal, QC H2X 2S6, Canada. Part of ELEKTRA, IMDA is held on 1 and 2 June at the Cinémathèque québécoise, 335 Boulevard de Maisonneuve E, Montréal, QC H2X 1K1, Canada.

MUTEK takes place from 1 to 5 June at various venues across Montréal.

 

Open Call for Artists: FutureFest Art Prize 2016

Sedition and Nesta have teamed up to create the first FutureFest Art Prize. Shortlisted works will be presented at FutureFest 2016, a weekend festival of radical ideas, compelling talks and interactive experiences designed to inspire people to question and shape the future. The festival will take place at the Tobacco Dock in London from 17-18 September 2016.

International artists and creatives are invited to submit photo and video works under one of the four themes of FutureFest: Love, Work, Play, and Thrive before Friday, 10 June 2016, midnight GMT.

Shortlisted works will be presented at FutureFest with a live public vote by the audience – an estimated 5,000 visitors. One winner from each theme will be announced at the event and will each receive a £500 cash prize with the chance to have their work featured on Sedition to an international audience of art collectors and enthusiasts.

Since 2003 FutureFest, powered by Nesta, has brought together innovative projects and inspirational people to explore ways of creatively and democratically shaping the future. The programme features exhibitions, immersive experiences, panel discussions and talks visitors will join an active discussion about how the world of the future might look like in 20-30 years time.

This year’s programme has centres around four themes. Future Love, curated by Ghislaine Boddington, looks at how intimacy, bodily contact and emotion could change alongside an increase in virtual spaces and algorithmic inputs. Ruth Amos’ Future Work programme examines possible future constructions of workplace systems and cultures, while Future Play, curated by Pat Kane, asks how play, game culture and gamification could shape culture in years to come. The final curatorial strand, Future Thrive, is curated by Dr Morgaine Gaye and explores new and potential manifestations of food, health and home life.

  • Check the T&Cs and click Get Started
  • Select an artwork to upload and click Upload
  • Add a name and description for your artwork
  • Check the box to submit to the FutureFest Open Call and select the theme you are submitting to in the drop down
  • Select a price from the options and click Submit For Approval
  • Complete your profile by uploading a profile picture and biography, signature and banner and click Save
  • You will be notified about your submission via email.

 

Technical requirements:

  • Video submissions must be no longer than 3 minutes long and should be submitted as HD 1080p 1920 x 1080 MOV, MPEG or MP4 files. The preferred codec is H264.
  • Still images must be at least 3000pixels wide and should be formatted as PNG or JPG files.

Electronic Art In Domestic Spaces: Sedition presents work in Share Festival, Turin

Sedition presents a curated display of works by eight artists Ryan Whittier Hale, Shu Lea Cheang, LIA and Katie Torn at the Piemonte Share Festival in Turin, Italy. The annual festival, which runs from 19 to 28 May 2016, is dedicated to supporting contemporary art in the digital age. Share is hosted by Casa Jasmina and Fablab Torino in partnership with Toolbox Coworking and Officine Arduino, the festival is led by the festival’s artistic director Bruce Sterling, science fiction writer, journalist.

The theme of the eleventh edition this year is ‘House Guest’, exploring alternative electronic networking, electronic art and networked appliances in the home through an exhibition, workshops and panel discussions.

Works by the selected Sedition artists will be shown in a curated display throughout Casa Jasmina alongside six prototypes for home appliances which, by incorporating elements of maker and open source culture, will reimagine the Internet of Things in the home.

The six projects featured in the exhibition are the shortlisted works for Share Festival’s annual Prize. The works were selected by panel of expert judges including Bruce Sterling, author and curator and digital artist Chiara Garibaldi. Visitors can explore the projects including a surveillance coffee machine by Carlo Galli, a 3D-printed timepiece by Christoph Laimer, a satirical web installation by Lauren McCarthy, and a Kinect-controlled music installation by Jean-Michel Roland. Works are displayed in different rooms of a simulated home at Casa Jasmina, giving a sense of how the ideas on display might translate into the home of the future. During the Festival one overall winner will be announced as recipient of the Share Prize. In 2014 the prize was won by Sedition artist LIA for her Filament Sculptures, which brings algorithmically generated forms into the physical realm.

Share Festival takes place at between 19 – 28 May 2016 at CasaJasmina, Via Egeo 16; Fablab Torino, Via Egeo 16; and Toolbox Coworking, Via Montefeltro 2, Turin, Italy.

 

Highlights at ISEA 2016 Hong Kong

From 16-22 May 2016, Sedition participates in the 22nd International Symposium on Electronic Art (ISEA) in Hong Kong.

Keynote speakers at this year’s symposium are Benjamin Bratton, Pierre Cassou-Noguès, Natalie Jeremijenko and Sedition artist Shu Lea Cheang, who presents a talk titled As The [Science] Fiction Goes at 11:00 on 18 May. Ghislaine Boddington of body>data>space will also present at the festival. In September 2016 Sedition and body>data>space will partner with Nesta and FutureFest to present the FutureFest Art Prize exhibition in London – Read more here.

On 20 May at 14:30 Sedition’s Head of Programmes and Operations, Ashley Wong, presents a talk on digital distribution of art in the Creative Media Centre, Room 5. She also presents during Curating Art After New Media HK 2016, a short professional development course, which runs from 16 – 22 May and is hosted by Videotage.

From 26-23 May Overlap present a five screen installation of Aquatint as part of the ISEA 2016 Juried Exhibition.

ISEA, which was founded in 1990 in the Netherlands, is an international discussion platform at which practitioners from different disciplines meet to exchange ideas on art and technology. This year’s programme is curated under the theme Cultural R>Evolution. The theme focuses on the idea that media creates the new while returning to the old; rather than the new emerging fully formed from the old, instead the margins change and forces redistribute.

The main activities at this year’s symposium take place between four Hong Kong locations: City University’s Creative Media Centre, Jockey Club Innovation Tower, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and Cattle Depot Artist Village. Numerous satellite events will take place throughout Hong Kong for the duration of the festival and beyond.
