This year, the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition features works by Jane and Louise Wilson, Ron Arad, Jake and Dinos Chapman and Yinka Shonibare.
The Summer Exhibition is a cornerstone of UK art – every year since 1769 it has invited artists from across the world, whether established or unknown, to submit works to the largest open call in the UK. Entries are put before a committee and the selected works are displayed through the summer months alongside works by leading contemporary artists.
The 2016 exhibition is curated by Richard Wilson RA and runs from 13 June to 21 August at Burlington House, Piccadilly. The exhibition’s overarching theme is the artist duo; Wilson has specially chosen long-term collaborators whose work represents the art world today.
Among the works presented are a photographic installation derived from Jane and Louise Wilson’s Chernobyl series. The installation lines the main staircase of the Royal Academy. Jake and Dinos Chapman present prints from their Human Rainbow series as well as their sculptural work The New Arrival, while Tim Noble and Sue Webster present their neon and aluminium work Forever.
In addition to the work of artist duos, the Royal Academy Summer Show contains over 1200 individual works by international artists – including works by a number of practitioners whose work is on Sedition. Ron Arad will exhibit Spyre, a large scale kinetic sculpture in the Royal Academy courtyard for the duration of the exhibition, while works by Michael Craig-Martin,Tracey Emin, Rachel Howard, Bob and Roberta Smith and Gordon Cheung can be seen on a tour of the galleries. Also showing work in the galleries is Yinka Shonibare, whose large scale installation can be seen wrapping the building in Burlington House in London’s Piccadilly.
Alongside the Summer Exhibition, the work of Sedition artists can be purchased as gift cards from the Royal Academy gift shop and foyer. You can read more on how to purchase the cards here. Alternatively, visit the Royal Academy online shop to explore the listed works.
